Mutha Nature's Grrrl

"Bridging the Dangerously Widening Gap between the worlds of Hip Hop and Folk, one jam at a time!" -K.D. di

WHAT WE ARE:

Mutha Nature's Grrrl is a band for the people, of the people, and by the people that serves as a bridge between the folk and hip Hip Hop, AKA Hip-Pop, communities. MNG (Mother Nature's Girl) covers Hip Pop songs in its unique style, making it accessible to the folk community. We have covered songs by Britney Spears, TLC, Akinyele , Salt-N-Pepa, Lil' Kim. and Hootie and the Blowfish.

WHO WE ARE:

Mutha Nature's Grrrl is a collective run through consensus. K.D. di Brown: Lead Vocals, rain stick The founder and leader of MNG, K.D. di, as she is called by her fans, had a successful career on the Middletown, Connecticut folk scene. While warming up for a set of Ani di Franco, Dar Williams, Indigo Girl covers and her own original songs, at a show at Wesleyan University, K.D. di was struck by the feminist message she heard on the radio playing before the show: It was TLC's No Scrub. When K.D. di got on stage to perform, she realized she could not perform the songs she had prepared. So she put down her guitar and did an a capella version of the chorus from No Scrubs: "Hearing it for the 1st time felt like reading the Seneca Falls manifesto for the 1st time," recalls K.D. di. "I didn't really know the song. But I knew I had to sing it. So I got on stage and sang, 'No, oh, oh, scru-u-u-bs/ No, oh, oh, scru-u-u-bs, No, oh, oh, scru-u-u-bs' for around 15 minutes. It was so beautiful. It was such a healing experience." From that day on, K.D. di decided to dedicate her life to translating hip-pop music with a message into folk music. "In this world of negative energy," says K.D. di, "songs like Toxic, by Britney Spears, which warns of pollution and environmental degradation, as well as songs on sexual equality such as Akinyele 's Put it in Your Mouth offer such a positive energy and message. It would be totally ridiculous for MNG, with its concern for world citizens, and it's namesake Mother Nature, to ignore this powerful people's music."
Ava Forrest: recorder, drums, back up vocals Ava Farkas was born to make music. At the age of 8, Ava wrote, performed, and tape-recorded the song "Mother Nature's Girl"--all from her bathtub in the Bronx, New York. When she met K.D. di, Ava was then musical and life partners with guitarist Brother Lucas (see below) and based in NoHo (North Hampton) where she lived after graduating from Smith College. The 3 of them met at Clearwater, where Ava was moved by K.D. di's Put it in your Mouth cover. "I couldn't believe K.D. di's voice, her message, her spirituality. It was so beautiful to watch her sing. Brother Lucas and I couldn't even dance. We just listened, held each other, and cried. I knew my recorder skills could add something to the already incredible experience. What I didn't know is that my 1 st composition ever, Mother Nature's Girl, would turn evolve into the name of our band Mutha Nature's Grrrl." Listen to Ava's song Mother Nature's Girl Brother Lucas: guitar, back up vocals Brother Lucas discovered his musicality late in life. His partner Ava encouraged Lucas to channel his creative, spiritual, and musical energy. Lucas was busy running a bookstore/ homeless shelter and the world's first raw foods cold soup kitchen. "I was learning so much from these homeless people. They were helping me as much as I was helping them. I didn't have any time to consider my own musical and spiritual potential." Luckily, "Ava showed my how my tapping into my musical reservoir would help all of us. And I'm happy to say that today, the bookstore also serves as an open mike for homeless performers."

Where are we now?

Sadly, MNG, had to go on hiatus. As Ava Forrest and Brother Lucas outgrew each other physically, sexually, emotionally, and intellectually, rehearsals became too charged with negative energy. MNG is happy to say that since attending a yoga therapy retreat together in the Berkshires, Ava and Brother Lucas have reconciled their energies. We are proud to announce that MNG is back, and doing what it loves best: Bridging the dangerously wide gap between the world of hip-pop and the world of folk music. Click here for our schedule!

If you would like MNG to perform at your concert halls, yoga centers, homeless shelter, bar/ and bat mitzvahs, please reach out and let us know. And if you have suggestions of songs you would like us to turn into Hip-pop songs, we're always looking for suggestion: )

Coming Soon: MNG music video, and Songs for the Labor Movement

MNG was honored to be invited to perform on a picket line outside of JFK airport. After some union members expressed discomfort with our cover of Lil' Kim's Not   Tonight , We have recovered from the initial disappointment and discouragement. MNG decided to heed the words of Joe Hill said "Don't mourn for me. Organize." So MNG decided to honor the wishes of the rank and file and cover holiday songs.
