A new study from the University of Montreal published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that a lot of sexual fantasies are pretty common and pretty vanilla.

1,516 participants rated 55 sexual fantasies and the researchers broke down the fantasies into four categories:  “statistically rare” (found in 2.3 percent or fewer of participants), “statistically unusual” (found in 15.9 percent or less of participants), “Statistically common” (found in more than 50 percent of the participants) and “statistically typical” (found in more than 84.1% of the participants).

How do the results translate into a top ten list? Well… In women, the top 10 most typical or common  fantasy descriptions are …

1. “I like to feel romantic emotions during a sexual relationship.” (typical, 92.2%)

2. “Atmosphere and location are important in my sexual fantasies.” (typical, 86.4%)

3. “I have fantasized about having sexual [sic] in a romantic location (eg on a deserted beach).” (typical, 84.9%)

4. “I have fantasized about having sex in an unusual place (eg in the office; public toilet).” (common, 81.7%)

5. “I have fantasized about taking part in oral sex.” (common, 78.5%)

6. “I have fantasized about giving fellatio.” (common, 72.1%)

7. “I have fantasized about being masturbated by my partner.” (common, 71.4%)

8. “I have fantasized about masturbating my partner.” (common, 68.1%)

9. “I have fantasized about having sex with someone that I know who is not my spouse.” (common, 66.3%)

10. “I have fantasized about being dominated sexually.” (common, 64.6%)

In men, the top ten responses are…

1. “I like to feel romantic emotions during a sexual relationship.” (common, 88.3%)

2. “I have fantasized about taking part in oral sex.” (common, 87.6%)

3. “I have fantasized about having sex with two women.”  (common, 84.5%)

4. “I have fantasized about having sex with someone that I know who is not my spouse.” (common, 83.4 %)

5. “I have fantasized about having sex in an unusual place (eg in the office; public toilet).” (common, 82.3%)

6. “I have fantasized about watching two women make love.” (common, 82.1%)

7. “Atmosphere and location are important in my sexual fantasies.” (common, 81.2%)

8. “I have fantasized about ejaculating on my sexual partner (For men only).”(common, 80.4 %)

9. “I have fantasized about having sexual [sic] in a romantic location (eg on a deserted beach).” (common, 78.4%)

10. “I have fantasized about giving cunnilingus.” (common, 78.1%)

I have to admit, I was kind of surprised that the most typical fantasy for men and women was “I like to feel romantic emotions during a sexual relationship,” and that in both top ten lists “romantic locations” were so important. Who knew we were such hopeless romantics? It’s not quite as Hallmark as it seems. I mean, right above the whole romantic setting fantasy is the ejaculating on my sexual partner fantasy. So, there’s that.
